It is with great joy that the Latino Media Collaborative welcomes you to this special convening of partners, supporters and those taking the first step to join our efforts. As a collective, we are working tirelessly to create a thriving system where outlets have needed resources and tools to continue serving crucial roles in their communities as trusted messengers, resources hubs, organizers, and much more.

I also congratulate the recipients of our small grants program for “Stop-the-Hate”, to promote awareness throughout the state of California of resources for victims of hate crimes.

Esperanza Guevara, Managing Director

With this summit and launch, I am excited to bring to fruition many years of behind-the-scenes work to strengthen the Latino media sector. Without your friendship, thought partnership, and support, this collaborative would not be possible. I have high hopes for the greater good we will accomplish together as we enter a new wea of journalism, where we face increasingly complex and interconnected challenges. Together, I believe we can unlocking great strength and power and that we will be better positioned to reclaim the narratives of our communities.

Congratulations to grant two stop the hate subgrantees

Together, our work aims to accomplish the following:

Increase awareness of California’s Stop the Hate program, which provides support and services to victims and survivors of hate incidents and hate crimes and their families and facilitate hate incident or hate crime prevention measures, among priority populations.

Educate and engage priority communities about the elements of hate incidents and hate crimes/related topics, such as community healing, cross-cultural and cross-racial collaboration, and the long-standing racial inequities and social conditions that enable hate incidents and crimes.

Reduce the stigma surrounding the reporting of hate incidents and crimes and encourage reporting and use of services by survivors.

ABOUT CALÓ NEWS

Caló News Group is an English language news and media outlet created to meet the needs of the growing U.S. adult Latinx population by providing news coverage on the most pressing issues.

A Special Message from Daniel Vasquez and Teresa Puente

“For too long, Latinos have been all but ignored by mainstream media, unless it involves crime or immigration. The mainstream media hardly cares about what issues are important to Latinos. Our readers demand more. They want news that informs, entertains and engages, but they want it via a Latino lens. We are here to provide that, and in doing so, we are rewriting our community's history.”

Daniel Vasquez - Managing Editor

“I took on the role as opinion editor at CALÓ NEWS so that I could become a gatekeeper. It’s an opportunity for me to write columns and editorials, but also a chance for me to amplify voices and publish other Latino/a/x writers. At CALÓ NEWS, we have elevated the voices of Latino/a/x journalists but also of Latino/a/x professors, doctors, activists, community leaders and students. In our first year and a half we have published more than 150 opinion pieces by more than 60 different writers, 90% of them Latino/a/x. I'm proud of what we have built and invite you to connect with us.”
