DAY 1

about latino media collaborative
-
Latinos are the fastest-growing demographic in the U.S. and the largest ethnic group in much of the Southwest, yet Latino media and journalism lack the funding, representation, and sustainability needed to serve this population. States like California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada have around 100 Latino media outlets, primarily small, independent publications owned by Latinos, which also play a crucial role in civic engagement. However, these outlets often operate with limited staff and financial resources as advertising dollars have not fully transitioned online, facing challenges exacerbated by the shift from print to digital platforms.
Financial sustainability is a pressing issue and it is essential for philanthropy, the private sector, and government to adopt policies and investments that ensure long-term support for Latino media. The shortage of bilingual, bicultural journalists who understand Latino communities and the need to address changing demographics and generational divides within the Latino population further compounds this issue.
The Latino Media Collaborative (LMC), founded in 2019, aims to tackle these challenges by leveraging Latino media to impact policy, change narratives, and promote civic engagement while strengthening the sector through advocacy, research, and capacity building.
-
The Latino Media Roundtable plays a critical role in coalition building on key priority issues, provides multilingual media services, manages multi-platform outreach campaigns, publishes original stories, and builds the capacity of the Latino media sector.
-
The Latino Media Collaborative leverages the power of Latino and community news media to impact policy, change narratives, and promote civic engagement, while also supporting advancement of the sector through capacity building, research, and advocacy. Public Awareness Campaigns
Since its founding, LMC has worked closely with partner outlets to create impactful media campaigns that inform and engage the Latino community. In 2022, LMC launched the Encara al Racismo campaign to promote the California State Library’s Stop the Hate initiative with our partners, raising awareness about hate crimes, prevention strategies, and connecting victims to healing resources through news reporting, research, and other media.
Other campaigns we have led address issues like disinformation in the Latino community, digital equity, re-entry resources after incarceration, and the 2020 Census. Grounded in research and community input, LMC ensures messages are tested, refined, and delivered across multiple platforms, including prime-time radio and TV, using diverse multimedia formats like articles, videos, podcasts, and social media content. Latino Media and Caló News presents: Diálogo Series
The Dialogo Series is a regular convening space for open discussion, conversation and dialogue within our community on the most pressing issues. Housed under our CALÓ News initiative, the dialogos are open to the public.
We envision a meeting of the minds, with panel discussions led by the leading thinkers and policy makers, one-on-one interviews with emerging and established leaders, as well as seminars to educate, enlighten and entertain. Topics range from the state of media in L.A. to healthcare issues to politics to wealth and prosperity. We seek robust audience participation, making sure that everyone has a voice in the conversation.
