capacity building
capacity building
Original news reporting is under immense pressure from economic, political, and systemic challenges, including the decline in ad revenue and the dominance of large digital platforms. Traditional news organizations are shrinking, changing ownership, or closing entirely, but this moment of crisis also brings opportunities for innovation.
Capacity-Building for media Outlets
LMC is working to reverse these trends by supporting outlets in expanding their online platforms, building digital audiences, and exploring hybrid business models to strengthen the industry. We also recognize the critical need to support emerging journalists who can effectively serve ethnically and linguistically diverse communities. Few journalism programs in the U.S. prepare reporters to cover economic, political, and social issues relevant to Latino/a/x communities or to understand how language and imagery influence community identity. Small, local Spanish-language newsrooms, which often lack resources, struggle to mentor and train journalists. With most ethnic media outlets in California operating with fewer than five full-time staff, LMC aims to address this gap through strategies that ensure the sustainability of independent Latino news media and high-quality journalism for future generations.
